Details:
- Appearance: Forms tight clumps of fleshy, light green or bluish rosettes. The leaf tips are clear or see-through, acting like windows for sunlight.
- Size: Grows only about 3 to 5 inches tall and up to 3 to 12 inches wide.
- Flowers: Produces small, delicate white or pale pink tubular flowers on a slender stem during the spring and summer.
- Toxicity: Non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it safe for pet owners.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Keep it away from harsh, direct midday sun, which can scorch or turn the leaves brownish-red.
- Water: Highly drought-tolerant. From spring to fall, water thoroughly every 7 to 10 days only when the top inch of soil is completely dry. In winter dormancy, reduce watering to once a month. Always err on the side of underwatering to prevent root rot.
- Soil: Requires a fast-draining gritty mix, such as a commercial cactus or succulent soil blended with perlite or pumice.
- Temperature: Prefers indoor temperatures between 68°F and 72°F (20°C to 22°C) and should not be exposed to frost or temperatures dropping below 40°F (5°C).
Haworthia cooperi, commonly known as Cooper’s Haworthia, is a charming, slow-growing succulent native to the dry regions of South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. It forms lovely clumps of small rosettes filled with fleshy, light green leaves that feature unique, translucent “window-like” tips. These transparent tips are a clever evolutionary adaptation, allowing sunlight to penetrate deep into the plant’s internal tissues while the rest of the rosette stays safely shielded from the harsh sun. Extremely low-maintenance and pet-safe, this drought-tolerant houseplant thrives best in bright, indirect light and well-draining sandy soil, requiring water only when the dirt has completely dried out.
